Transportation and Communications Minister Raul Perez Reyes on Thursday indicated that the
new Jorge Chavez Airport will come into operation in January 2025.
"The 27 million passengers initially expected to be hosted will reach 40 million annually, and the stations will prevent us from having any problem in meeting the growing demand linked to passenger and airplane traffic," he indicated during the installation of the first passenger boarding bridge as part of the new airport expansion project.
The Cabinet member said this work will help grant a very important boost to tourism activity, which was highly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister Perez Reyes explained that the new airport will consist of three areas. He added this is one of the domestic (travel) areas, which will contribute to relying on a first-class infrastructure so that tourists and passengers in general can travel from the airport in comfortable and safe conditions.
The Cabinet member said progress stands at 60%. Thus, it is within the planned period and will be at 75% by the end of 2023.
"This way, we will have the new Jorge Chavez Airport operating properly in January 2025," he reaffirmed.
Peru expects to have a first-class airport in the region, which will position the country in a very important manner in terms of tourism. It will allow for the development of a series of activities, from the hotel business and gastronomy sectors, to the tourist attractions that this country has to offer.
Lastly, he said it has been important to rely on the second runway, because this will prevent flights from being diverted to other airports in the event of possible problems on the first runway.
