Peru: Negotiations for purchase of monkeypox vaccine are underway

12:30 | Lima, Aug. 10.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) on Wednesday reported that Peru has been participating —with special interest— in the process of negotiations led by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for the purchase of the monkeypox vaccine.

In a statement, Minsa indicated that Peru is one of the countries interested in acquiring this vaccine, together with PAHO Member States, from the only laboratory in the world that produces it, which is located in Denmark.

Likewise, the ministry affirmed that Peru supports the decision to ensure an equitable acquisition and distribution of the vaccine among countries.

In this regard, Minsa welcomed the fact that this acquisition can be made through the Revolving Fund as the most appropriate mechanism to ensure equal and solidarity-based access to monkeypox vaccines, taking into account technical, regulatory, programmatic, legal, and ethical aspects, as well as the availability in the event of a shortage of such vaccine.

The government agency explained that the Revolving Fund will allow requesting countries of South America to acquire the vaccines using a single process and time frame.

"We reaffirm our commitment to health care for all Peruvians, especially for vulnerable populations, to whom we are fully committed," the statement read.
