Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Elizabeth Galdo inaugurated the Digital Week on Wednesday during the Third Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM3) of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and related events held in the city of Lima.

This event —organized by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur)— seeks to promote the exchange of experiences and good practices on issues related to digital economy that have a direct or indirect effect on commercial transactions.

This gathering will address topics such as artificial intelligence, online consumer protection, digital security, digital rights, as well as the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It will come to an end on August 25.

"APEC Peru 2024 has innovation among its priorities, and in this third edition of Digital Week, we will continue to promote discussions on digital economy. We have called on APEC to ensure that the Digital Week initiative, promoted by Peru, continues in the following years," Minister Galdo indicated.

As is well known, new technologies such as artificial intelligence create unprecedented business opportunities and have the potential to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and open up new markets. However, this progress must be accompanied by adequate online consumer protection.

Minister Galdo commented that the digital transformation of SMEs is an important issue for Peru, since this sector represents a significant percentage of production and employment across the APEC region, in the case of Peru, 99.2% of the total business sector.

The Digital Week will see the participation of experts from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF); the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD); the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB); the Federal Consumer Protection Agency of Mexico; the General Directorate for Communication Networks, Content and Technology of the European Commission (DG Cnect); the Export Council of Australia (ECA); the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce of Colombia (SIC); among other important entities and universities from Peru and abroad.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
