Economy and Finance Minister Alex Contreras on Wednesday affirmed that the Executive Branch is preparing a package of measures worth S/1 billion (about US$265 million) to improve the response to the emergency caused by heavy rains in northern Peru.

"Indeed, the Council of Ministers today agreed to accelerate the implementation of measures. In this sense, the preparation of an Urgency Decree and Supreme Decrees are underway with the aim of injecting around S/1 billion (about US$265 million) into enhancing this operational capacity in the face of the damage that northern regions have suffered," he explained.

Moreover, the government official mentioned that the Executive Branch submitted a Supplementary Credit Bill to Congress about three weeks ago, which has been approved this week by the Budget Commission and that should be debated during a Congress plenary session next week.

"In the meantime, and considering that a week can make the difference between saving lives and saving infrastructure, we have chosen to accelerate (the implementation of) this package of economic measures, which will be partly financed with the Contingency Reserve and temporarily financed with the reallocation of balances," he explained.

The head of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) indicated that the country cannot wait, because it is already known what the El Niño Phenomenon implies and the damage that rains are causing.

"In this regard, we will publish a series of economic measures that will improve the response capacity to emergencies, between tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. This implies the acquisition of machinery, kits, food, fuel, and a series of demands," he explained.

"At this moment, the demands of the emergency situation amount to more than S/4 billion (about US$1.06 billion)," the minister stressed.

The Economy sector's head pointed out that the country's operational capacity will be strengthened with this first package of exceptional measures, in such a way that economic damages will be minimized.
