The mandatory social immobilization measure in regions under extreme alert —due to the COVID-19 pandemic— will be in effect twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Claudia Cornejo has reported.

Additionally, the high-ranking official explained that one member per household will be able to leave home from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in order to buy essential food and medicines, access health services, and go for a walk of one hour.

"The following needs to be considered in the case of the regions under extreme alert: people are allowed to leave home between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. to perform essential activities such as the purchase of essential food and medicines, doctor's appointments, and a one-hour walk," she said on Monday night.

At a press conference held at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Cabinet member noted that citizens are also authorized to go out to engage in economic activities that are currently allowed.

Cornejo remarked that, "of course, it is not possible to put a police officer behind each citizen. We appeal to a sense of responsibility to overcome this health crisis."

However, she highlighted the support of the National Police of Peru and the Armed Forces to ensure the compliance with the measures adopted by the Government to tackle the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Transportation

The minister emphasized that regular passenger transport services in Metropolitan Lima will operate from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.; the Lima Metro, the Metropolitano bus rapid transit system, and complementary corridors from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and taxis authorized by the Urban Transport Authority for Lima and Callao (ATU) will operate 24 hours a day.

For his part, Culture Minister Alejandro Neyra called on everyone to responsibly abide by the lockdown rules and biosafety measures these days in order to ensure public health.
