Peru: Machu Picchu Inca Trail to remain closed to tourists through Aug 22

10:48 | Cusco (Cusco region), Aug. 19.

The National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) and the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) in Cusco ordered the closure of Routes 1, 2, and 3 of the Inca Trail Network to Machu Picchu to remain in force through Saturday, August 22, due to natural events occurring in the area.

In some sections, landslides, swollen streams, flooding of camping areas, collapsed restroom facilities, damage to footbridges, and soil erosion have been reported, among other incidents that pose a risk to visitors.

The statement emphasizes that the decision was prompted by rising water levels and overflowing in some waterways, as well as the presence of sediment and debris in certain areas, due to the weather conditions recorded over recent days.

The document —signed by Sernanp and the DDC in Cusco— indicates that this temporary closure is being implemented to ensure the safety of visitors, as well as to protect the natural and cultural heritage.

Personnel from Sernanp and the DDC in Cusco will continue to monitor the routes and assess safety and passability conditions to prevent risks and safeguard visitors' well-being.

Alternative routes available

During the closure period, alternative visitor routes remain available.

These include Route 5 – Chachabamba, which can be reached via kilometer 104, as well as the kilometer 106 access point, depending on safety conditions and the provisions established for each one.

Likewise, the DDC in Cusco will provide the necessary assistance for the rescheduling, change, or refund of admission tickets for visitors affected by the temporary closure.

Minam and Mincul said they will continue working in coordination to monitor and assess the conditions of the routes, prioritizing visitor safety.

The authorities specified that the reopening of Routes 1, 2, and 3 will be subject to the safety and passability conditions determined during the assessments.
