Peru: Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero sworn in as new Health Minister

The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, on Wednesday evening swore in Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero as the new Minister of Health, replacing Luis Quiroz Aviles, who resigned from the post.

Velasco Guerrero is a surgeon.

He previously served as Executive President at the National Health Institute (INS) and superintendent of the National Superintendence of Health (Susalud).

Likewise, he was Director General of the Arzobispo Loayza National Hospital in Lima.

The new Cabinet member is a specialist in Internal Medicine, holds a master's degree in Health Services Administration, a doctorate in Public Health, and has extensive experience in the public sector.

Velasco Guerrero also served as Executive Director of Contigo—the national program that provides a non-contributory pension to people with severe disabilities living in poverty under the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion—as Medical Director at the Ate Vitarte Emergency Hospital, and as Health Services Manager at the Callao Municipality.

Likewise, he held several posts at the Ministry of Health (Minsa), including head of the Directorate for Comprehensive Health Care and Integrated Networks of the IGSS, Director General of Health Directorate V – Lima, and Director General at the General Office for National Defense, Emergencies, and Disasters.

Hours earlier, Prime Minister Denisse Miralles announced that she would meet with the President of the Republic to evaluate technical profiles to lead the health sector.

After the swearing-in ceremony, President Balcazar, Cabinet Chief Miralles, and Minister Velasco Guerrero posed for the official photograph.

This event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.
