Acting Congress Chairman Fernando Rospigliosi said that
will serve as President of the Republic until July 28.
Within this framework, the Parliament head shared a letter from Congress addressed to the top official underscoring that point.
The document specifies that the presidential sash may be handed over from July 26—as indicated in a previous letter—until the start of the transfer-of-power ceremony on July 28.
The handover will take place in accordance with the organizational and ceremonial requirements of the event.
The letter—signed by the Congress speaker—also states that the handover of the presidential sash "is exclusively a protocol and custodial act and therefore does not affect the continuity of the exercise of the Presidency of the Republic."
"The Presidency is maintained, in accordance with the Political Constitution of Peru and the principles of institutional continuity and preservation of the constitutional order, until the effective transfer of power, following the taking of the constitutional oath by the president-elect on July 28, 2026," it adds.
In that regard, it specifies that, during the formal transfer-of-power ceremony, the chair of the Congress of the Republic—to be elected on July 26—will place the presidential sash on President-elect Keiko Fujimori, in accordance with republican protocol.
"So that people stop speculating and making a mountain out of a molehill: Jose Maria Balcazar is President until July 28," Rospigliosi posted on X Thursday afternoon.
