Peru is first Latin American country to receive 2026 influenza vaccines

Peru became the first country in Latin America to receive influenza vaccines for the 2026 season, procured through the PAHO Revolving Fund following following arrangements made by the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

More than a month in advance, the country secured a total of 8.2 million doses: 6 million for people aged 3 and older, and 2.2 million pediatric vaccines for children aged 6 months to 2 years and 11 months, ensuring timely protection for the population, particularly the most vulnerable groups.

Health Minister Luis Quiroz stressed that this achievement is the outcome of coordinated efforts across the sector under the current presidential administration.

"We have succeeded in securing from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) the privilege of being the first country in the Americas to obtain these vaccines," the government official stated.

During an event held today at the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN), the government official said that some influenza cases have already been reported.

The Cabinet member attributed this to migratory flows from Europe and the United States to Latin America, even though the winter season has not yet begun.

"As is well known, the peak season for respiratory infections occurs in May and June. Nevertheless, as a preventive measure, we have carried out the necessary coordination," he told reporters.

More shipments to arrive through late March

The first batch, consisting of 537,600 doses, arrived on February 13, 2026. The remaining deliveries will be carried out progressively through March 23.

The vaccines were received in strict compliance with cold-chain requirements, as well as technical standards that ensure their quality and safety.

Following the required verification, Cenares will begin immediate distribution to health facilities nationwide, ensuring timely supply across all regions.

With this action, Minsa aims to strengthen early planning and vaccine supply for influenza during the winter season.
