Peru plans to consolidate, in the medium term, an interoperable and sustainable digital statistical system, the Chief of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), Dr. Gaspar Moran, announced during his second day of participation in the 57th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission in New York, United States.

The initiative aims to strengthen agricultural planning based on reliable data, improve international comparability, and optimize operational efficiency through the integration of censuses, administrative records, and satellite data.

During his remarks, INEI's head highlighted that the modernization of agricultural statistics constitutes a strategic priority for Peru, aimed at ensuring accurate and timely information aligned with international standards.

In that context, he welcomed the report presented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on agricultural statistics, underscoring the need to strengthen national capacities and incorporate new technologies as a central axis of statistical transformation.

One of the advances presented was the implementation of the EOSTAT initiative (Earth Observation for Statistics).

This program incorporates methodological innovation through the use of satellite imagery and geospatial artificial intelligence to produce statistics on land use and crop yields with greater precision and timeliness.

The official reported that Peru participated in the global consultation of the FAO World Programme for the Census of Agriculture 2030.

He added that the South American country is systematically applying its revised guidelines as part of the process of aligning with international standards.

Peru promotes global standards in governance

Earlier, Dr. Moran participated in the Praia Group on Governance Statistics meeting held within the framework of the same international forum.

As co-chair of the Praia Group on Non-Discrimination and Equality, INEI played a key role in validating the questionnaire on discrimination, contributing to the strengthening of international statistical infrastructure and positioning Peru as a regional benchmark in governance statistics.

This participation adds to Peru's remarks on the first day of the forum, where the country highlighted its leadership in the global debate on statistical modernization and the strengthening of national statistical infrastructure.
