The Indian Council for Cultural Relations has launched a photography exhibition to mark the 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Peru and India.
The two nations over the next one year will be celebrating their diplomatic ties through a host of activities, website Deccanherald.com reported.
The exhibition ‘Peru and India: 50 years of diplomatic relations – A photographic testimonial’ will continue into 2014 and represents the decisions of the two States to join efforts to achieve economic and social development through political cooperation.
The event which kick-started on May 17 at Azad Bhavan showcases photographs of significant state and official visits, relevant historic documents and Peruvian landscapes.
According to Javier Paulinich, Ambassador of Peru to India, “The aim of this exhibition is not only to remember the past achievements but also to represent the future: the firm decision of India and Peru to continue strengthening the political, economic and cultural ties between both the countries in order to attain the objectives of progress and social inclusion of their people.”
A photograph dating back to May 1963 shows presentation of credentials of the first Peruvian envoy to India, Minister Eduardo Sarmiento Calmet to Dr S Radhakrishnan at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Another iconic picture shows the UN General Secretary and Peruvian Ambassador Javier Perez de Cuellar, presenting to Indira Gandhi, the UN Population Award in 1983.
Also on exhibit were a few recent pictures including one taken in January 2010 where MoS for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor, is seen signing an agreement with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Ambassador Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde.
