The immunization process against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country will begin on Tuesday, February 9, with the vaccination of Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti, Vaccination Team Coordinator at the Ministry of Health (Minsa) Nancy Olivares reported on Monday.

"The process will begin tomorrow (Tuesday) with the vaccination of the President. We are happy as this restores hope of tackling the health crisis," she told America Noticias TV show.

According to Olivares, in this first round, the President will be vaccinated along with health care workers on the frontline of the battle as well as with vaccinators.

As stated by the vaccination team coordinator, President Sagasti is an emblematic person, whose vaccination will motivate others to get vaccinated too, while demonstrating that the vaccine is safe and effective.

For her part, Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti will be one of the last to be vaccinated among the health personnel, when the next round of doses arrives.

"She (Minister Mazzetti) has decided to be one of the last persons to get vaccinated. She has decided that health care workers get vaccinated first. We belong to the administrative staff and this is a selfless gesture. We are going to prioritize the most vulnerable workers," Olivares pointed out.

As is known, the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines —consisting of 300,000 doses— arrived on Sunday night in Lima on a flight from Paris (France), where it made a stopover after leaving Beijing (China).
