Peru: How Pope Leo XIV experienced Holy Week when he was Bishop of Chiclayo

13:35 | Chiclayo (Lambayeque region), Apr. 3.

The celebration of Holy Week in the city of Chiclayo, Peru's northern Lambayeque region, not only brings together thousands of faithful but this year carries special significance: keeping alive the spiritual legacy left by the former bishop of this diocese—now Pope Leo XIV—who is remembered with particular affection by the local congregation.

This was stated in remarks to Andina News Agency by parish priest Emerson Lizana, secretary to the Bishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo, Monsignor Edison Farfan.

Lizana noted that, although he did not personally witness those celebrations, he is familiar through testimonies with the deep spirituality with which then-Monsignor Robert Prevost guided these observances.

"Pope Leo XIV lived Holy Week in a very intense way, marked by a profound spirituality that he transmitted to everyone. He prepared each celebration with great care, even writing his homilies by hand," the priest said, recalling that ceremonies at Santa Maria Cathedral Church always drew large numbers of believers.

Lizana stressed that one of the most significant moments was the Chrism Mass, which brought together priests and seminarians in an atmosphere of reflection and renewal.

"It was a very special celebration, where the unity of the clergy and commitment to the Church were strengthened," he indicated.

A different yet massive Holy Week

This year, Holy Week in Chiclayo is being observed under particular circumstances due to maintenance work at Santa Maria Cathedral Church. This has required some activities to be moved to other venues such as Beata Imelda School and the main temple's atrium.

Despite this, participation has remained massive. During the recent Palm Sunday, a large turnout was recorded, reflecting the deeply-rooted nature of this festivity among the population.

"People miss the cathedral, but they understand that these works are necessary. Even so, faith remains firm," Lizana noted.

Invitation to main celebrations

The parish priest indicated that the Good Friday Passion service will take place at the same venue at 5:00 p.m. (local time).

Likewise, the Easter Vigil on Saturday will be celebrated in these alternative spaces.

He noted that the ceremonies will be streamed to reach those unable to attend in person, thus strengthening the bond with the community.

A legacy that lives on

"The memory of Pope Leo XIV remains present among the people of Chiclayo. During Palm Sunday, many faithful even chanted his name at the end of the celebration, reflecting the affection and identification they still feel for their former pastor," he pointed out.

"The people remember him with great affection. For many, he is still 'Monsignor Roberto,' and his spiritual legacy continues to inspire the way faith is lived in Chiclayo," Lizana concluded.

Thus, the northern city is experiencing a Holy Week with devotion, memory, and hope, where tradition and renewal come together around a faith that remains strong in its people's hearts.

Pope Leo XIV —Robert Francis Prevost— was born in the United States but also holds Peruvian nationality.

He spent much of his life on missions in the South American country.
