The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, on Wednesday said the government is placing emphasis on disaster prevention and is taking measures to address the Coastal El Niño emergency, such as installing Bailey bridges in affected areas.

"We are carrying out strong prevention efforts. We are in Tumbes and Piura, and we will continue, because we already have contracts for Bailey bridges, as nature is hitting hard," Balcazar told Radio Nacional.

The Head of State noted that while the forces of nature cannot be controlled, it is possible to carry out preventive work in the face of situations such as river overflows.

The top official said the latter occur due to the lack of dams to mitigate such risks.

Similarly, he underscored that the population has been waiting for years for this type of infrastructure to be built.

In this regard, Balcazar said the current government will begin executing dam projects in various regions, many of which are already in the pipeline.

He added that all experts across the country are welcome to join this effort.

Citizen security

The President underscored that his administration is working to make citizen security a reality.

The Head of State said the new Prime Minister, Luis Arroyo, is clear about this objective.

"We consider it the number one priority, in order to provide calm, above all to ensure that the elections are among the most transparent, peaceful, and clear," Balcazar noted.

"That is why we have appointed someone knowledgeable in the matter (Luis Arroyo), to strengthen the work we had been carrying out with the Prime Minister who has just left office (Denisse Miralles)," he added.

Petroperu

The President also confirmed that the S/500 million (US$145 million) granted to the State-owned oil company Petroperu by the government will be executed through external indebtedness, as stated in the communiqué issued by the Ministries of Economy-Finance and Energy-Mines last Tuesday.

He indicated that his administration is working to determine which entity would finance it, adding that this is on the agenda for the Cabinet session to be held this Wednesday.

"That item is on the agenda, which is of great interest to me, so that the people of Peru can be reassured," he concluded.
