The Presidency of the Republic expressed its condolences to the relatives and the people of Arequipa for the death of 27 miners in Yanaquihua district in the province of Condesuyos (Arequipa region).

"We express our condolences to the relatives and the people of Arequipa for the death of the 27 miners, an event that occurred in the Yanaquihua sector, Condesuyos province in Arequipa," said a statement posted on Twitter by the country's Presidency.

Likewise, the government agency reported that the Ministries of Interior and Defense have been working since the beginning of this tragedy to rescue and transfer the bodies.

"As a Government, we will provide all the necessary support to the regional government and the Municipality of Condesuyos in these moments of pain," it added.

On Sunday, the Public Ministry confirmed the death of 27 miners, who were trapped early Saturday morning due to an explosion in a tunnel inside the artisanal mine located in Yanaquihua district in the province of Condesuyos (Arequipa region).

This was reported by Prosecutor Giovanni Mattos of the Provincial Corporate Criminal Prosecutor's Office of Condesuyos, based on the number of miners who relieved another similar group at around 7:00 p.m. Therefore, it does not rule out more deaths.

The explosions at La Esperanza I mine —located 8 hours away from the city of Arequipa— are believed to have been caused by a short circuit that sparked a nightmarish fire inside the tunnel. The fire spread rapidly through the wooden props supporting the deposit.
