Peruvian Interior Minister Victor Torres announced the establishment of a Multisectoral Committee to address the issue of illegal mining, with the participation of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the Attorney General's Office, the National Superintendence of Migrations, the Judiciary, as well as regional and local governments.

Speaking from Pataz, where he visited the headquarters of Poderosa mining company, which was recently attacked by criminal groups, Torres stated that this is a complex problem that requires multisectoral action.

For his part, Energy-Mines Minister Oscar Vera stressed that actions will be taken to address the supply of explosives and the authorizations for formalization, in greater coordination with regional governments, which are in charge of this control.

"This is a frontal confrontation with this activity that harms us. As a Government, we guarantee private companies’ activities," he stated.

Permanent presence

On the other hand, the Minister of Interior announced that a special command post staffed with more than 200 police officers will be set up at the mining company in Pataz, La Libertad region, to deal with criminal activities linked to illegal mining.

"We have met with Poderosa executives. In the next few hours, forces from the Special Group Against Organized Crime (Grecco), the National Directorate of Special Operations (Dinoes), and the intelligence department will be deployed to guarantee security in the area," Torres said.

Moreover, the government official remarked that the Armed Forces presence will be seen in the area in the next few hours, and the state of emergency will remain in effect in said areas, for reasons of domestic order.

"Everything that happens in Peru is the Government's concern. Trust your Government, which will provide you with security. We will not rest until we find those responsible for such crime," he affirmed.
