The President of the Republic, Jose Jeri, said on Thursday that the government is carrying out concrete and sustained actions to gradually restore public calm and reduce insecurity levels on Peruvian streets.

In this context, the top official announced that a supreme decree will be published establishing a ban on two people riding on the same motorcycle, as part of the measures aimed at strengthening public security and preventing the commission of crimes.

"At this time and under the current circumstances, it is necessary to take action, even if it temporarily affects a certain sector, because these are measures the (Peruvian) State must assume in order to gradually restore public calm and reduce insecurity levels," he emphasized.

The Head of State explained that, once the legal framework is published, the corresponding procedures and sanctions will be established, initially in the form of financial penalties.

He added that the Peruvian National Police will be in charge of initiating enforcement actions aimed at addressing the sense of insecurity felt, for example, by transportation workers when they observe two people traveling on a motorcycle.

"It cannot happen again that, for example, such situations go unnoticed or that no intervention is carried out. There are no more excuses, and this will undoubtedly help reaffirm the principle of authority and restore a sense of calm—at least at this time, which is certainly challenging for our country due to the wave of crime," Jeri expressed.

Subsequently, and in this regard, the Head of State reported that the government will issue the regulations for Law No. 32490 in the coming days.

He explained that this law establishes extraordinary measures against the crimes of extortion and contract killings affecting public transportation and freight transport companies, as part of the fight against delinquency and organized crime.

"After the meeting with transportation workers, we held a technical meeting with the relevant sectors to finalize the regulations," Jeri said.

"It is certainly a complex law because it involves multiple actors, several ministries, and various sectors. Once we have all the details, we will provide the pertinent information so that the population and the transportation sector can become familiar with the specifics of this important law," he emphasized.

President Jeri made these remarks from Lima's San Juan de Lurigancho district. There, he oversaw the results of a police operation carried out in the Zarate area, which led to the dismantling of the criminal gang "Los Malditos del Malecon Checa" (The Damned of Malecon Checa) and the arrest of four of its members.

The detainees, who had been hiding along the Rimac River banks and generating fear among nearby communities, had illegal weapons and materials used for the micro-distribution of drugs seized from them.

According to police intelligence information, those apprehended were planning to carry out a robbery at a commercial establishment in the coming hours.
