More than 2,000 families affected by emergencies in Peru will benefit from 15 tons of humanitarian aid donated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), including prefabricated shelters, family tents, and solar lamps, worth over S/420,000 (above US$124,000).

The donation comprises 48 prefabricated shelters, 100 family tents, and 1,080 solar lamps, which will help address the most urgent needs of affected communities.

The aid was received by the National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI), an agency under the Ministry of Defense.

It will be used to assist populations affected by current emergencies and those that may occur across the country, including families affected by earthquakes recorded in various localities of Junin region.

The Defense Minister also noted that the arrival of this aid was made possible through cooperation involving the Peruvian Government, UNHCR, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, and Costco Shipping, which facilitated the maritime transport of the supplies from UNHCR's logistics center in Panama.

"I believe this is an example of solidarity, assistance, and what can be achieved when things are done among friends and through cooperation," Belaunde said.

"The aid not only reaches the institutions involved but, most importantly, swiftly reaches those most affected," he added.

Moreover, the government official highlighted the ongoing work of INDECI and its teams deployed nationwide to respond to emergencies occurring in various regions.

The Cabinet member stressed that preparedness is essential to reduce the impact of phenomena such as earthquakes, floods, and El Niño.

"Peru faces emergencies that do not cease, and your nationwide deployment is an example and a lesson that civil defense is everyone's responsibility," he underscored.

Cooperation

The humanitarian aid was mobilized by UNHCR from its logistics center in Panama, in response to the request for additional support made by the Peruvian Government to address needs identified in areas affected by emergencies.

The ceremony was attended by INDECI Chief Luis Vasquez; UNHCR Representative in Peru Laura Almirall; Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Peru Song Yang; and Vice President of Cosco Shipping South America Yu Hu.
