Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Espa announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will make its utmost efforts to coordinate with other sectors to help ensure a successful visit by Pope Leo XIV, which will contribute to bringing all Peruvians together.
Before the Senate Committee on Constitution, Rules, and Foreign Relations, he said His Holiness's apostolic visit, scheduled for November, will be one of the most significant international events for Peru during this administration.
"The Pope's visit will be a balm for Peruvians; I am sure it will greatly contribute to bringing everyone together," Espa noted.
The Cabinet member highlighted that the Pope's arrival will allow Peru to showcase itself as a country open to dialogue, as well as committed to peace, tolerance, and recognition of all Peruvians.
In this regard, he expressed confidence that the visit will help convey a message of hope, dialogue, reconciliation, and national unity.
Foreign policy
During a presentation of the main foreign policy objectives for the administration's first year, the minister said Peru must be an active voice in defense of democracy, peace, and international security.
"Our foreign policy will reaffirm the active defense of democracy, the rule of law, the separation of powers, national sovereignty, and fundamental freedoms," Espa stated.
"We also aspire to regain an institutional and constructive role in these matters, particularly in the Organization of American States and the United Nations," he added.
Moreover, the government official said Peru unequivocally rejects terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and will strengthen international cooperation to prevent and combat this threat.
"The threats affecting our citizens today are increasingly complex and have a strong transnational dimension," Espa stated.
"Drug trafficking, illegal mining, human trafficking, arms trafficking, money laundering, and transnational criminal organizations cannot be tackled by countries acting in an isolated manner," he added.
The Foreign Minister noted that in the coming months Peru will assume leadership responsibilities in the Brasilia Consensus, the Andean Community, and the Pacific Alliance, from which it will foster less declarative and more functional integration.
This cooperation will focus on three areas directly linked to the Government's priorities: transnational organized crime, disaster risk management, and infrastructure and connectivity.
