Peru: FA office in Piura receives UN experts providing support for rain-affected people

08:49 | Lima, Apr. 15.

The Decentralized Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs located in Piura, led by Ambassador Javier Sanchez-Checa Salazar, has received the visit from a team of the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC).

Said UN experts arrived in Piura to provide technical coordination support to different organizations on information issues for an adequate distribution of aid to the victims in areas affected by torrential rains.

The team, which is part of the international emergency response system for sudden-onset emergencies, is made up of seven experts deployed in Piura, Lambayeque, and Tumbes.

Those experts have the mission of developing the emergency roadmap through a diagnosis of urgent needs, knowing the operational capabilities of organizations, and identifying gaps to manage a rapid intervention.

The UNDAC team, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will remain in northern Peru for three weeks to support the local partners involved, including Indeci, IOM, Plan International, Care Peru, Save The Children, the International Committee for Rescue, Adra, the regional government, municipalities, among other organizations.

As of April 2018, the UNDAC system, which in most cases is mobilized by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), has led more than 285 missions in more than 100 countries, intervening in natural and environmental disasters and situations of complex emergencies.
