Peru: FA Minister travels to OAS seeking consensus to defend diplomatic asylum's essence

18:30 | Lima, Dec. 2.

Foreign Affairs Minister Hugo de Zela traveled to Washington D.C., United States, on Tuesday to present Peru's position before the Organization of American States (OAS) Permanent Council on the Caracas Convention, as well as to seek consensus to defend the diplomatic asylum's essence and original purpose.

The government official is scheduled to explain in Washington, D.C. why Peru considers that the 1954 Asylum Convention is being misapplied.

"This convention was created to protect politically persecuted individuals, and today it is being used to protect politicians who have committed common crimes," he said in remarks to the press.

The Cabinet member reaffirmed that the purpose of Peru's presentation is "to protect the concept" of diplomatic asylum, born in the region, and to ensure it is used exclusively for the purposes for which it was created.

Bilateral agenda

The Foreign Affairs Minister will also hold a working meeting with United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to continue strengthening the bilateral strategic partnership, as well as to deepen cooperation in security, defense, the fight against transnational organized crime, and investment promotion.

The agenda includes a presentation before the Americas Society/Council of the Americas (AS/COA) and a meeting with Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President Ilan Goldfajn.

These activities are aimed at boosting investment and cooperation opportunities.

Additionally scheduled are meetings with OAS Secretary General Albert Ramdin and with U.S. lawmakers.
