Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros estimates the Dakar Rally 2018 will draw more than 1.5 million spectators, thus bringing an economic impact of over US$360 million to the country.
Spectators include those attending the
Dakar Village fair on January 3-5 and part of the race itself on January 6-11.
"
Peru has returned to the
Dakar Rally schedule after five years. People's expectations for the race —known as the world's toughest one— are such that more than 1.5 million spectators —including nationals, foreigners, and the general public— are expected to come to Lima, Ica, Arequipa, and Puno regions, where Dakar will be raced," he noted.
According to the government official, Peruvian nationals will make up 90% of all spectators. However, the event will put Peru in the eye of more than 190 million viewers around the world.
International spectators will come from Chile, Brazil, and Europe (mainly from France).
Average daily expenditure per spectator
National spectators are projected to spend US$100, whereas foreigners may invest around US$1,500, with the bulk of their money going towards transportation, accommodation, and food.
As is known, the 40th edition of Dakar is slated to
start on January 6 in Lima at Peruvian Army Headquarters, known as Pentagonito. The race will then run towards Bolivia and Argentina.
Dakar Village Fair
The Lima-based Dakar Village fair opened its doors on Wednesday and will run thru January 5 at Pentagonito facilities in San Borja district.
The exhibit's admission is free, and some 150,000 people are expected to attend it.
Dakar Village's attractions include drive simulators, large screens, souvenir shops, virtual reality experiences, autograph sessions, and an official vehicle exhibition.
