The European Union —made up of 27 countries— represents a potential market of more than 500 million people with an average annual income of US$35,000, providing an exceptional opportunity for Peruvian exporters, the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (PromPeru) has reported.

The aforementioned bloc appears as the second most important market for non-traditional exports.

Thanks to the Peru-EU Trade Agreement, preferential access has been obtained for 99.3% of agricultural products and 100% of industrial goods.

To date, PromPeru has 30 Peruvian Trade Offices Abroad (OCEX), of which 7 are located in important European cities, such as Madrid, Milan, Rotterdam, London, Hamburg, Moscow, and Paris. They have brought very concrete results in business opportunities and greater added-value niches.

According to data from the National Superintendence of Tax Administration (Sunat), Peruvian exports to the European Union reached US$6.811 billion at the end of 2023, a 1.5% rise over the previous year and 6.2% compared to 2013.

Regarding the main exported products, copper ores and its concentrates topped the 2023 ranking, accounting for 21.2% of total shipments to the EU, with an exports value of US$ 1.442 billion. They represented an expansion of 51.9 % compared to 2022.

These were followed by exports of fresh avocados (US$498.8 million, +24%); refined copper cathodes and sections (US$490.4 million, +91.2%); green coffee beans (US$395.2 million, -37.6%); and fresh blueberries (US$370.6 million, +19.3%).

Regarding the main Peruvian regions that contributed to the dynamism of exports to the European bloc, Lima led the list in 2023, with US$1.282 billion, although it registered a 7.3% decline.

Moquegua (+119%); Ica (-2.7%); Piura (-12.2%); and La Libertad (+13.6%) were also included in the top-five exporting regions ranking.
