Cusco's Main Square buzzed with excitement last weekend as students from the Diego Quispe Tito National University of Arts of Cusco presented giant, impressive, and unique allegorical displays.

More than 20 works of art, created with metal frameworks, recyclable materials, and paint, made their way along El Sol Avenue—the main access route to Hawkaypata.

The pieces had been prepared by university students from different semesters and branch campuses.

The displays, featuring messages on environmental protection, the political situation, prominent figures, Cusco culture, tourism, and other themes, drew applause and praise from tourists and local families who packed the installed stands and surrounding areas.

This presentation is the most eagerly anticipated event among Cusco residents and even tourists who plan their visits to the city during June, as the artworks reflect their identity, pride, culture, and response to the issues currently affecting Cusco, their country, and the world.

Authorities at the institution—one of the most important for preserving Cusco's artistic heritage, formerly an art school and, for the past few years, a university—praised the works created by students, faculty members, and administrative staff.

Through a judging panel, they also recognized the dedication and enthusiasm shown in expressing the sentiments of Cusco's people.

In the "Alegorías sin Auspicio" (Unsponsored Allegories) category, the judging panel declared a tie for first place.

The distinction was awarded to "El Viaje del Inca Túpac Yupanqui" (The Journey of Inca Tupac Yupanqui), created by Drawing and Ceramics students from the fifth and seventh semesters, and "Toro Pukllay," presented by students from the same specialization in the ninth semester.

Second place went to "Alejandro Velasco Astete, Vuelo del Halcón Cusqueño" (Alejandro Velasco Astete: Flight of the Cusco Falcon), a joint work by Drawing and Sculpture students from the fifth and ninth semesters.

Third place was awarded to the allegorical display "Llapalla Teqsimuyunchista Kawsarichisun," presented by the Checacupe branch campus.

In the "Sponsored Allegories" category, first place was awarded to “Ecos de un Legado Andino” (Echoes of an Andean Legacy).

The proposal was presented by ninth-semester Artistic Education students (Groups A and B), who stood out for the conceptual and artistic strength of their work.

Second place went to "Supaypa Kamachiq," created by ninth-semester Drawing and Sculpture students (Group A).

Third place was awarded to “Entre Tejados y Travesuras” (Between Rooftops and Mischief), produced by seventh-semester Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art students (Group A).

Among the personalities honored by the students were Daniel Estrada, the renowned former mayor of Cusco and former congressman; Lieutenant Alejandro Velasco Astete, the pioneering aviator from Cusco; Cusco-born writer Clorinda Matto de Turner; Jorge Nuñez del Prado, the musician and composer from Paucartambo who passed away this year; and Leonardo Arana, an art teacher who died a year ago.
