Contract packages under the Government-to-Government (G2G) Agreement with the UK have been signed to implement projects worth S/600 million (about US$ 158 million) in Peru's health and education sectors.

Presided over by Peru's Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez, the signing ceremony took place at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

The event included the participation of British Ambassador to Peru Kate Harrisson; Executive-Director of the Authority for Reconstruction with Changes Amalia Moreno; representatives of the UK technical team; as well as representatives of the SUYAY II consortium, Jaime Urquiza and Daniel Querub.

According to the Cabinet chief, these signatures signify the completion of the Transition and Emergency Government's plans for both sectors, through the Government-to-Government Agreement signed by the Authority for Reconstruction with Changes.

"This moment is very important for us, in our capacity as Transition and Emergency Government, because this signature consolidates a stage that —let's say— is before the closure of initiatives related to the reconstruction of schools and hospitals," the government official remarked.

"Thus, we are closing the health and education cycles," she said, noting that "the pandemic is still going on, but we cannot put reconstruction aside."

Health sector works

The contracts signed during the ceremony at the PCM are the ones to be executed in the health sector. These are packages 7 and 8. The first one refers to interventions in Ancash and entails an investment of over S/216 million (about US$57 million). It is expected to benefit 118,692 people.

On the other hand, package 8 involves four hospitals in Ancash and La Libertad, with an investment of more than S/205 million (about US$54 million). These works will benefit 101,078 citizens. Oxygen plants will be installed in said hospitals.

Education sector works

In the case of education, the plan is to reconstruct 15 educational institutions across the country. Thus, package 8 includes the reconstruction of 9 educational institutions in Ancash, Huancavelica, and Lima, with an investment of over S/90 million (about US$23.9 million).

Meanwhile, package 9 includes the reconstruction of 6 educational institutions in La Libertad, Piura, and Tumbes, with an investment of more than S/99 million (about US$26 million).

These works are intended to benefit 5,967 students in kindergarten, primary school, and high school.
