Peru: Choquequirao Archaeological Park reopens to visitors

10:01 | La Convencion (Cusco region), Mar. 24.

The Choquequirao Archaeological Park reopened to visitors after completing cleaning and maintenance works on the bridle path in the Capuliyoc-Cocamasana, Chiquisca-Playa Rosalinas, and Playa Rosalinas-Marampata-Choquequirao sections.

The head of the Decentralized Unit at the Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Cusco, Maritza Rosa Candia, referred to the road maintenance works undertaken in the area, which involved cutting vegetation, removing stones and fallen rocks, as well as widening the roadway and conserving ditches. Thus, the path has been left clear for visits.

The works were carried out by the construction staff, guards, and custodians of the Choquequirao Archaeological Park and were supported by members of the Tour Operators Association located in the district of San Pedro de Cachora in Abancay Province.

Prevention against rain

The head of the Choquequirao archaeological park, Jose Estrada Pachacuteq, thanked San Pedro de Cachora residents for their support, and recommended adopting preventive measures in the face of persistent rains in the area.

"Visitors and tour operators are recommended to adopt preventive measures, since heavy rains continue to fall in the area, which could cause difficulties during the tour," he warned.

Visits suspended in early 2023

Visits to Choquequirao were suspended at the beginning of the year, due to the risk of rock slides, a situation that has been overcome because of the works carried out in the area.

The population of San Pedro de Cachora will be the most economically benefited with the reopening of the archaeological monument, given that most of them are dedicated to tourism and related cultural activities.
