The Provincial Municipality of Callao has launched a major project to beautify the historical beach resort of Chucuito and turn it into one big tourism and trade zone, similar to the traditional “Caminito” street of Buenos Aires – Argentina, the municipality announced today.

Works include the improving of street lighting by placing Genoese-style ornamental lampposts in the facades of houses, besides tightening security measures in the area.

The remodeling of this historical resort includes the repairing of door frames and bars that still maintain its viceregal style. The plan also includes the installation of colonial-style streetlamps with decorative lighting along the Chucuito pier.

In an effort to attract more tourists to the area, the local municipality will organize gastronomic and cultural festivals, dance shows, exhibitions and horseback riding tours through the traditional streets of this calm and hospitable resort.

The Constitutional Province of Callao is located in the largest bay in this part of the continent, and in the central occidental region of the country.

It is the most important port of the coast of South America. Even if it forms a geographical unit with the city of Lima (the capital of the country), it has a totally independent administration, as well as its own resources that make it a very special place.

It has an extension of 148 km² (57 sq ml) and a population of almost 600,000 people.
