The authorities in charge performed the removal of the body of the U.S. tourist who died after an accident in the Rimaya sector of the Alpamayo snow-capped peak, in Santa Cruz district of Huaylas province (Ancash region), the Ancash Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER-Ancash) reported.

The rescue team was made up of 9 members from the High Mountain Rescue Unit (Depsam) of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) based in Caraz.

After finding the unfortunate foreigner's body, the team carried out rescue maneuvers. Afterwards, the corpse was taken to Base Camp 1.

As reported by the COER-Ancash, the tourist has been identified as a 64-year-old citizen of the United States

Depsam agents handed over the body to the respective authorities, such as the Huaraz Police Department and the Provincial Corporate Criminal Prosecutor's Office of Huaylas.

A representative of the Provincial Corporate Criminal Prosecutor's Office of Huaylas reported that the procedures for removing the body were carried out in the hamlet of Cashapampa, due to the inaccessibility of the area where the accident had occurred (in the Rimaya sector).

The authorities ordered the transfer of the body to the morgue in the city of Huaraz.

Moreover, the Huaraz-based Legal Medical Unit of the Public Ministry has been designated to perform the autopsy.

It should be noted that the Criminal Investigation Departments (Depincri) of the National Police in Huaraz will be in charge of the investigation to determine the accident's cause.

On the other hand, the authorities in charge are coordinating with the U.S. Embassy in Peru, so that the body can be handed over to the relatives in the coming days.

As is known, the COER-Ancash team reported the accident using an inReach satellite communication device.
