Peru's former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez was arrested by members of the
Peruvian National Police (PNP), who came to her home in the city of Tacna on Tuesday afternoon, after the
Judiciary issued an immediate arrest warrant for her.
Afterwards, the former congresswoman was transferred to the Judiciary's detention facilities in said city to serve the 18-month pre-trial detention ordered against her.
Footage released by the media showed the precise moment when three PNP agents arrived in Chavez's home, located at Pasaje Sol de Oro 1921, to capture her.
Earlier, during a live broadcast on Tik Tok, the ex-Cabinet chief stated that she was waiting for the police and that she had not been notified, until then, of the decision taken by the Permanent Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court against her.
This afternoon, the collegiate division chaired by Judge Cesar San Martin, ordered the capture of the former Prime Minister, who is being investigated for the alleged crime of rebellion, along with ex-Ministers Willy Huerta and Roberto Sanchez.
The afore-mentioned Permanent Criminal Chamber declared the appeal of the Prosecutor's Office against Chavez —who was facing the process under appearance with restrictions— well-founded.
Attorney's statements
After Chavez's capture, her lawyer, Erwin Siccha, told RPP Noticias that the defense finds the decision of pre-trial detention unfair and disproportional, due to the convincing evidence presented at the hearings.
"The Judiciary has issued the order. We believe that it is an unfair and disproportional decision, also because there is convincing evidence that refutes the Public Ministry's claim," he said.
However, the attorney affirmed that they will abide by the decision and will make use of the corresponding legal mechanisms to reverse it.
