Peru: Agricultural exports totaled US$1.729 billion in Jan-Feb this year

Agricultural exports totaled US$1.729 billion in the first two months of the year (January-February), up 0.8% compared to the same period in 2022, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) reported on Monday.

In this case, Midagri explained that exports of traditional products represented 5.4% of the total, while non-traditional exports accounted for the remaining 94.6%.

For example, traditional exports reached US$93 million, while non-traditional shipments totaled US$1.636 billion, 12 percentage points higher than it was in 2022.

The products that stood out in the agricultural-exports ranking in said period were fresh grapes, which totaled US$637 million and accounted for 39% of total sales, fresh mangoes (US$144 million; 8.8%), fresh cranberries (US$131 million; 8%), and fresh or chilled asparagus (US$44 million; 2.7%).

Other products that stood out in the ranking include avocados, whose sales amounted to US$43 million and made up 2.7% of the total, animal feed (US$40 million; 2.4%), frozen mangoes (US$37 million; 2.2%), other cacao beans (US$26 million; 1.6%), oil raw palm (US$24 million; 1.5%), and paprika (US$20 million; 1.2%).

Together, these 10 products accounted for 70% of the non-traditional exportable supply.

The products that contributed the most to this increase included evaporated milk (+188%), other seaweed (+102%), other cacao beans (62%), avocados (+35%), prepared or preserved asparagus (+33%), animal feed (+28%), fresh or chilled asparagus (+25%), fresh cranberries (+25%), fresh grapes (+24%), among others.

Midagri underlined that, within the basket of non-traditional products, sales of fruits and vegetables reached US$1.156 billion (71% of non-traditional agricultural exports) as of February 2023, an increase of 14.5% compared to 2022.
