The first batch of artifacts taken from Machu Picchu nearly a century ago was escorted by 600 police officers on a motorcade to the government palace in the heart of the Peruvian capital.
Ancient relics were transported in three vans from Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport to the presidential house.
Statements were made by the Security State Services Chief Raul Salazar, who said they installed a safety device to protect Incan remains journey to the palace.
“The Machu Picchu artifacts were transported through three routes established by the police. The boxes remain sealed until further order... This recovery is quite an achievement and historical event," he told RPP.
This first batch of 360 archaeological pieces arrived in Peru from New York, following the steps taken by the Peruvian Government to repatriate these historical relics.
