A total of 124 patients will be treated with medical oxygen 24 hours a day thanks to the putting into operation of two oxygen-producing plants granted to the Lima-based Arzobispo Loayza Hospital by the solidarity initiative known as
During a ceremony,
Health Minister Oscar Ugarte expressed the satisfaction of President Francisco Sagasti and Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez for the donation "which exemplifies the participation of the institutions that make up
Respira Peru and constitutes a fundamental support for the Loayza Hospital" in times of COVID-19.
Hospital Director Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero explained that each plant can produce 20 m3 of medical oxygen (93% purity per hour).
Both of them can provide oxygen to 124 hospital beds, for which he thanked
Respira Peru. It must be noted that the hospital has so far exceeded its capacity by 40%.
The largest number of infected people are aged under 30. More people are arriving at the healthcare facility day after day. Thus, more beds are being made available to patients.
On behalf of
Respira Peru, the Deputy Secretary of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, Father Guillermo Inca, recalled that the three institutions joined efforts for solidarity and well-being because they want to bring help to the people who are suffering due to the pandemic.
Similarly, the Director of the Human Medicine Faculty at San Ignacio de Loyola University (USIL) Dr. Maria Saravia stressed that this donation is the outcome of months of efforts, adding that this initiative is one of the most important achievements that society has witnessed during the pandemic.
These oxygen plants are part of the first six fully assembled in the country at the request of
Respira Peru.
Three of them have been delivered to the national health system: Arzobispo Loayza National Hospital (2) in Lima and EsSalud's Hospital III Jose Cayetano Heredia (1) in Piura.
Respira Peru has also delivered other nine imported medical oxygen plants to the hospitals in Arequipa, Huanuco, Tacna, Picota, Tingo Maria, Trujillo, Abancay, and Ica (2).
