Minister of Economy and Finance Elmer Cuba stated today that the government is prepared to address the impact of the El Niño phenomenon in the country.

"We are prepared; we have the resources and the most effective targeting mechanisms at our disposal—unlike six years ago with the pandemic, which came as a surprise," he noted in an interview with RPP.

He explained that there are now more tools available to assist those affected, including small-scale farmers and others at risk of losing their capital assets due to drought.

Cuba further noted that while the subsidy announced for the most vulnerable population can never replace a job, it is intended to prevent them from falling into extreme poverty.

"We are prepared to face the shock of the El Niño phenomenon," the minister emphasized.

In this regard, he mentioned that three weeks ago, robust fiscal measures were announced to prevent an economic slowdown—not only through the subsidy for the most vulnerable, but also via maintenance programs for schools and hospitals, aimed at fostering economic recovery.

Additionally, the minister highlighted the current constructive relationship with Congress regarding economic matters, pointing to the recent approval of a supplementary credit, the General Account of the Republic, and the budget for the 2027 fiscal year.

He further announced that he will meet with all parliamentary groups next week to explain the initiatives his ministry is undertaking and to hear their perspectives.
