In every country, competitiveness “goes hand-in-hand” with technology, and a successful development requires our political leaders' highest-level commitment, Peru-based Microsoft Strategy and Technology Director Luis Enrique Torres said on Monday.

It must be noted Microsoft Peru and the Economy and Finance Ministry-run National Competitiveness Council (CNC) joined efforts to create the "Towards the Bicentennial" 2014-2018 Competitiveness Agenda.

The said project is aimed at ensuring development and enhancing competitiveness in Peru.

"Our intention [...] is to reinforce the message on the need for important measures to be taken, which require our political leaders’ highest-level commitment," Torres told Andina news agency.

Participation

Likewise, he mentioned the CNC has been participating in scientific, technological and innovative fields with the aim of boosting competitiveness in the country.

"We have been involved in the Information and Communications technology (ICT) sphere [...]," Torres underlined.

Technology Impact

In Peru, technology growth can be identified since every Peruvian citizen is becoming "more technology-driven" nowadays.

According to Torres, technology is "expanding." Nine people —out of 10— own a mobile phone, he mentioned as example.

"In the next four or five years the number of citizens, who own a smartphone, is expected to triple [...]," the Director noted.

"In the case of Peru, a 10% growth in public spending on innovative technologies has been registered; it would account for 0.75% of GDP," Torres added.

Finally, he said technology is a "crucial tool" to change companies' productivity levels and supports every large-, micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprise, as well as the public sector and citizens.
