Large mining companies interested in expanding investments in Peru

14:56 | Lima, Nov. 27.

Currently, the largest mining companies in the world are located in Peru, and they are all eager to invest here, Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP) Chairman Abraham Chahuan said on Monday.

"Nowadays, the largest mining companies on the planet are present in Peru, and they are all eager to invest," he said as part of the mining union's 80th anniversary celebrations.

Chahuan stressed the need to generate legal, social, and other conditions to execute the existing projects in the country valued at more than US$53 billion.

"The agenda is clear. This was intensively discussed at Perumin. The institute and the companies launched a statement, and we will continue promoting that agreement, because I believe that the foundations that we need for development are expressed in it," he stated.

Moreover, the institute's head affirmed that social conflicts do not provide the best climate for investment.

"People are afraid of investing, and I am talking about locals, not foreigners. Local investment has been restricted because people are afraid of making investments in an environment that is not completely stable," he indicated.

Chahuan highlighted that this is the first time at the Annual Conference of Executives (CADE-Executives) that other industries acknowledge that the mining sector is the growth engine of the national economy.

"We are all aligned with. My final message is that Peru has a population of 34 million people. Dialogue and persuasion is needed, but ultimately the State has to move forward, Peru has to move forward, and the State has to support the projects because it is our main partner," he remarked.
