The trade sector grew 7.31% in April 2026, the highest growth rate recorded so far this year, driven by the performance of wholesale, retail, and automotive activities, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported.

According to the institute, the sector posted cumulative growth of 5.51% between January and April this year compared with the same period in 2025.

INEI reported that wholesale trade increased 5.73% in April, driven by higher sales of machinery and equipment, particularly heavy machinery, electrical equipment, industrial air conditioning systems, and medical equipment.

The result benefited from higher sales of metals and metallic minerals, associated with demand for gold, copper, zinc, and silver.

Sales of construction materials and hardware products performed positively, boosted by public and private investment, as did sales of liquid and gaseous fuels due to increased freight and passenger vehicle traffic.

The segment recorded higher sales of household goods, pharmaceutical and medicinal products, home appliances, personal hygiene products, as well as food and beverages.

Retail trade

Meanwhile, retail trade grew 5.80% compared with April 2025.

The result was driven by the performance of supermarkets, minimarkets, and convenience stores amid the nationwide expansion of retail locations.

Sales of pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, and toiletries rose.

Meanwhile, department store operations benefited from the acquisition of new customers and the opening of new locations.

INEI further reported higher sales of hardware products linked to home improvement projects, as well as increased sales of computers, peripheral equipment, and software during promotional campaigns such as Cyber Wow.

Fuel sales increased as well, due to higher vehicle traffic and the opening of new service stations.

Sales of furniture, home décor items, household electrical appliances, clothing, footwear, and leather goods posted positive results.

Automotive sector posts strong growth

Automotive trade was the fastest-growing segment, expanding 25.22% last April.

According to INEI, the result was explained by higher sales of light and heavy vehicles, supported by promotional campaigns, the opening of new dealerships, adequate inventory levels, and attractive financing options.

Sales, maintenance, and repair services for motorcycles, as well as sales of motorcycle parts and accessories, increased, driven by promotional events and improved credit conditions.

Sales of motor vehicle parts, components, and accessories also posted positive results, along with mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair services.
