The
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of Peru, congratulated the government and people of China on the occasion of the traditional Lunar New Year, in a post on social media.
"The Government and people of Peru wish a prosperous Lunar New Year to the People's Republic of China. May the Year of the Dragon be full of abundance, prosperity and joy!" the Peruvian government agency wrote on Friday.
Chinese New Year, a.k.a. Lunar New Year, is one of the most significant celebrations in China. It is a festive period in which Chinese return to their places of origin.
Festival in Peru
With colorful dances and a series of cultural activities, the
Chinese Embassy in Peru began the celebrations of the Lunar New Year.
This will be the year of the dragon, which is considered a symbol of power, vitality and good fortune within the Chinese zodiac.
The Chinese Park, located in Lima's Miraflores district, was the meeting point for the activities, in which not only Chinese immigrants and their descendants participated, but also locals, as well as many tourists.
"Today (Friday) we gather to celebrate the Chinese New Year and the Spring Festival, which is the most important traditional festival in China. It consists of saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming the new; praying for good fortune, worshiping our ancestors, and reuniting with our loved ones," Chinese Ambassador to Peru Song Yang remarked.
For his part,
Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea, who also attended the activity, highlighted the importance of more than ten years of bilateral
"comprehensive strategic partnership" and reaffirmed Peru's commitment to continue strengthening the long and fruitful relationship of friendship and cooperation.
