The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced today that rail service on the Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu route in the Cusco region is being progressively restored following the accident that occurred on the afternoon of December 30.
After the incident, authorities immediately activated their response, deploying specialized teams to the area.
The head of the MTC, Aldo Prieto Barrera, traveled to the Cusco region with the President of the Republic, Jose Jeri, as well as the President of the Council of Ministers, Ernesto Alvarez Miranda, and the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Teresa Mera, as part of the follow-up to the emergency response.
Authorities visited several clinics in the region to check on the health of those injured in the train accident. During these visits, they received direct information from medical staff about the patients' progress and the care they are receiving.
Meanwhile, specialists from the General Directorate of Transportation Inspection and Sanctions arrived in Pampaccahua, the site of the train accident. They inspected the railway and the trains involved: one from Inca Rail and the other from PeruRail.

Working in coordination with local and regional authorities, a technical team from the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) is verifying the technical and operational documentation of the rail service, as well as gathering information to help clarify the causes of the accident.
Nearly 2,000 tourists, both Peruvian and foreign, were safely evacuated to Ollantaytambo.
The Government of Peru, under the leadership of President José Jerí, reaffirms its commitment to maintaining a coordinated state response, with continuous monitoring and constant communication with authorities and diplomatic missions, guaranteeing clear information, timely assistance, and safe conditions for the development of tourism.

Public Prosecutor's Office
The Machu Picchu Provincial Mixed Prosecutor's Office reported that the railway line in the Pampacahua sector (kilometer 94+200 of the railway connecting Ollantaytambo with Machu Picchu), where the collision between two passenger trains occurred, leaving one dead and several injured, was reopened early this morning.
Deputy Provincial Prosecutor Rosa Isabel Vicente Vásquez, in charge of the investigation, also reported that personnel from the concessionaire in charge of the railway removed the damaged machinery to resume service in the area.
The investigation into the incident continues, in conjunction with the Cusco Police Unit for the Prevention and Investigation of Traffic Accidents (UPIAT).
This includes taking statements from witnesses, victims, and responding police officers, as well as requesting information from the train companies, among other actions.
