Did you know that Peru boasts the highest diversity of birds worldwide? The South American country hosts over 1,800 species, 118 of which are endemic, meaning they can only be found naturally in our country.

These features make Peru an ideal destination for nature lovers and birdwatching enthusiasts.

To strengthen this positioning, the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (PromPeru) participated in the Global Birdfair 2024 from July 12 to 14 —the largest birdwatching event in the UK.

Under the slogan "Peru: Symphony of Birds," PromPeru's stand promoted bird routes in the northern, central, and southern regions, such as Amazonas, Cajamarca, Cusco, Ica, Junin, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Madre de Dios, and San Martin.

On the fair's first day, it presented the seminar titled "Bird Tourism in Peru: Supporting Protected Areas, Local Communities, and Threatened Species."

This was an opportunity to show how tourism can be a powerful conservation and sustainable development tool.

It is worth noting that, in the 2023 edition, PromPeru achieved over 300 meetings.

Additionally, it organized the seminar titled "Birds and People of Peru: An Exploration of the Interaction of Birds and People in Peru," with significant attendance.

Peru, an ideal destination for birdwatching

Birdwatching is an important segment that has been growing annually worldwide.

This activity represents a potential market of 2.4 million birdwatchers interested in visiting Peru in the coming years.

Since 2012, PromPeru has been working on promoting the South American country as a destination with great biodiversity and ideal for birdwatching at both domestic and international levels.

An important fact is that, in 2019, birdwatchers in Peru spent US$1,920, an amount higher than the average tourist expenditure.

Besides, their stay in the country is long, averaging 16 nights.
