Global Big Day and October Big Day: Competitions in which Peru takes top spots

The undeniable leadership of Peru as a global destination for bird watching has been reflected in the triumphs obtained at the most renowned international competitions: Global Big Day and October Big Day, in which the country proved to have the most variety of bird species in the world.


With an impressive registration of 1,384 bird species, the country surpassed its own previous record by 251 species, thus cementing its preeminent position at this challenging event.

After two years of being overshadowed, Peru is shining again at the summit of these international competitions.


Thus, Peru regained leadership in this type of international competitions after two years.

In 2021, Peru was crowned world champion at Global Big Day, while in 2022 it took second place after Colombia.

The regions that stood out in this dazzling ornithological display are 10: Cusco (551), Loreto (549), San Martin (475), Madre de Dios (459), Pasco (284), Cajamarca (259), Lima (209), Piura (203), Amazonas (172), and Tumbes (133).


With more than 1,850 species identified, of which more than 100 are endemic, Peru cements is position as the country with the third-highest number of bird diversity in the world.

This natural richness positions Peru as a leading destination for bird watching lovers, mainly at renowned events such as Global Big Day.


Global Big Day 

Global Big Day, the prestigious global bird watching competition, coordinated by Cornell Lab of Ornithology at Cornell University, has witnessed the triumphal resurgence of Peru. 

The South American country emerged as world champion in 2021 with 1,351 species recorded, returning to its place of honor after three years.

In 2018 and 2019, Peru occupied the second spot after Colombia, and was crowned world champion in 2015 and 2016.
