In this regard, the government official said the Supreme Pontiff will travel to Zaña (Lambayeque region) for the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo's canonization.
The Cabinet member noted that, from a religious standpoint, this important celebration will be the high point of his visit to Peru.
"The entire country is awaiting the arrival of the Peruvian Pope. I am sure it will be something extraordinary. The religious high point will be his trip to Zaña (Lambayeque), where the 300th anniversary of Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo's canonization will be celebrated," he stated.
Saint Toribio —who was the second archbishop of Lima— was canonized on December 10, 1726.
Pope Leo XIV's devotion to this saint, who died in Zaña in 1606, began during his pastoral ministry as Bishop of Chiclayo, a position he held from 2014 to 2023.
"Pope Leo XIV is very excited about it," Espa told reporters on Wednesday night.
The minister also announced that the Supreme Pontiff's itinerary will include a meeting with President Keiko Fujimori at the Government Palace.
"He (the Pope) will be received by President Fujimori and will have a special meeting with her. There will be a joint press conference with President Fujimori and the Pope. They will also speak with various authorities gathered at the Main Square," Espa indicated.
Regarding the public Mass scheduled at Las Palmas Air Base in Lima's Surco district, the minister said it will draw a large crowd, adding that they are working to ensure it is a success.
Pope Leo XIV's first apostolic visit to Peru will take place from November 11 to 17, 2026. It will include the cities of Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa.
