The Official Gazette El Peruano has received the Certificate of Inscription of Documentary Heritage on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register for Latin America and the Caribbean, due to the preservation of valuable collections that enrich the regional and global collective memory.

It should be pointed out that the National Library of Peru received the same distinction.

The Official Gazette El Peruano (1825), the oldest newspaper across the continent, was recognized for its issues released between 1826 and the first half of 1868, a corpus of 2,982 issues, contained in 28 bound volumes, that provides information beyond the legal framework in which the young country of Peru was being forged.

In the case of the National Library, this recognition is given for the preservation of 74 works from the private library of General Jose de San Martin and the protection of 30,693 negatives of photographs —on glass plates (1864-1933) — from the renowned Courret Collection.

El Peruano's distinction was delivered by UNESCO Representative to Peru, Guiomar Alonso Cano, to Felix Paz, editor-in-chief of Editora Peru, which owns El Peruano newspaper and Andina news agency.

Paz Quiroz expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that July 13, 2023, will be recognized as a new important day within the almost 200-year history of the Official Gazette El Peruano.

"Upon receiving the Certificate of Inscription of Documentary Heritage on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register for Latin America and the Caribbean, our newspaper, El Peruano, moves towards the commemoration of its bicentennial," he highlighted.

"Without a doubt, what better way to do so, and today we are considering and announcing, as of now, our next application to the World Memory of the World Register, to which we aspire to be inscribed upon completing our first two centuries of history," the Editora Peru editor-in-chief added.

Likewise, he noted that the inscription of 2,982 issues contained in 28 bound volumes from El Peruano collections released between 1826 and the first half of 1868 —the same corpus that was declared Cultural and Documentary Heritage of the Nation— is now certified.

"In these copies, we can trace the testimony of the past and present of Peru, of the early days of the Republic, of thoughts, of the cultural heritage, and of the Peruvian nation's identity," he remarked.

The ceremony was also attended by Editora Peru Board Chairman, Hugo Aguirre; San Borja District Mayor, Marco Alvarez; the Representative of the Memory of the World for Latin America and the Caribbean, Laura Sanchez; and the Chief of the National Library of Peru, Fabiola Vergara.
