Peru boosted the signing of the declaration "A promise for nature and well-being for climate action" during the
held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The
document was signed by indigenous organizations from the region as part of the parallel event called "Protected areas and indigenous peoples," organized by Sernanp and the
National Association of Executors of Administration Contracts for the Communal Reserves of Peru (Anecap) at Peru Pavilion located inside the COP28 headquarters.
As part of agreements, guaranteeing the participation of indigenous peoples in decision-making spaces related to conservation, promoting the organization of communities to make the most of opportunities derived from sustainable development, and implementing climate action proposals for indigenous peoples, such as the Amazon Indigenous REDD+ Proposal, stood out.
Likewise, protected natural areas and conservation will be promoted as part of indigenous territorial governance strategies in the region, in accordance with the expectations for well-being and protection of indigenous peoples' territories, in addition to raising awareness among the population about the risk posed by illicit activities, deforestation, and the degradation of Amazonian ecosystems.
Furthermore,
Sernanp —as the State-run entity responsible for the conservation of Peru's protected areas— expressed its commitment to promoting the continuous involvement of indigenous populations in the development of conservation policies, strategies, and projects, with a focus on respect for the rights and self-determination of indigenous peoples.
Among other institutional commitments those that stood out were: promoting programs and projects related to the development of indigenous peoples and their collective rights, fostering the articulation of protection mechanisms in favor of environmental defenders and indigenous rights defenders that protect not only communal territories but also protected areas, as well as promoting the articulation of sustainable economic activities of communities with fair trade and the commercialization of their products for special markets.
Sernanp specified that these commitments are based on the RIA axes: community monitoring, indigenous economy, governance/financial sustainability, and rescue of indigenous peoples' ancestral knowledge under transversal gender approaches, as well as defense and protection of environmental defenders' rights.
Parallel event
The government agency also affirmed that this declaration was the outcome of the parallel event called "Protected areas and indigenous peoples," organized by Sernanp and Anecap, at which the conservation and co-management experiences with indigenous populations in the field of protected areas were made known.
