The Chancay Megaport will be inaugurated on November 14 by the Presidents of Peru, Dina Boluarte, and the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, in a ceremony to be held at the Government Palace in Lima for security reasons, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer has announced.

The Peruvian Cabinet member said the inauguration will be held virtually from the Government Palace at the request of the Chinese government, while hundreds of senior officials from both countries will be present in Chancay, some 80 kilometers north of Lima.

"It is a real inauguration, because work is going to start, but it will be virtual. President Boluarte and President Xi Jinping will be at the Government Palace with a large group of Peruvians and Chinese citizens. They will not be in Chancay for the Chinese president's own security reasons," Ambassador Schialer explained.

The diplomat said the ceremony will take place in the afternoon of November 14, the day the Chinese president will make a state visit to Peru.

"The visit will last the entire afternoon and evening of November 14, and he will join the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum Leaders' Meeting the following day," to be held in Lima, the minister indicated.

The Peruvian government stated on Tuesday, during a visit to show the great progress of the megaport construction, that this infrastructure, built with majority Chinese capital, will enable the Andean country to become "Latin America's Singapore."

"Our goal is to become the Singapore of Latin America, so that port cargo passes through here on its way to Asia. Whenever someone from Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, or Argentina wants to go to Asia, they should think of Peru as a departure point to Asia. That is what we are aiming for," Transportation and Communications Minister Raul Perez Reyes explained.

The inauguration will include the first stage of the port, which has entailed an investment worth some US$1.4 billion to have four docks with a total length of 1,500 meters, 27 specialized cranes, and 40 autonomous vehicles.

The next stage will be completed within a four-year period, with the aim of tripling port cargo.
