Peru: Chavin de Huantar site will reopen to tourists on Dec 6 with free admission

The emblematic archaeological site of Chavin de Huantar, located in Ancash region, will reopen to tourists on December 6, offering free admission to visitors until December 31, 2020.


This information was confirmed by the monument's director, Franco Valdez, who pointed out that minors and the elderly will be allowed to enter as well.

"A decree has been issued, which provides that minors shall be allowed to enter archaeological sites as long as they are accompanied by a supervising adult," he told Andina news agency.

Protocols and measures

Like other archaeological sites, Chavin de Huantar has implemented strict biosafety protocols for its reopening process.


To begin with, visitors must make a reservation (click here to do so). It must be noted that all the information provided at the reservation request form will be considered a sworn statement.

Moreover, only groups of 8 people will be allowed to enter, and each group must be accompanied by a certified tour guide. Entrance to the monument will be limited to 75 people per day, that is, 30% of the total capacity.

The site will be open on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Evening tours will be not available for the moment, and visitors will only be allowed to tour the galleries El Lanzon and Doble Mensula.


Once inside, visitors must wear their face mask, undergo a temperature check, and sanitize their hands.

The Chavin de Huantar Archaeological Complex is located in the highlands of Ancash region, in Huari Province, and was one of the region's top tourist destinations before the outbreak of COVID-19.
