Peru's Economy and Finance Minister Jose Arista on Thursday stated that the launch of Chancay Port will allow the entry of Chinese merchandise for 500 million consumers in Latin America.

"The Port of Chancay turns out to be the gateway, the passport, the place through which Chinese merchandise can enter, not only for 33 million Peruvians, but for nearly 500 million consumers existing in Latin America," he told TVPeru.

The government official said he was surprised by the extremely good reception extended by the Chinese Government to President Dina Boluarte's State visit, despite the fact that China's interest in having Peru as a Strategic Partner is known.

"President Dina Boluarte traveled (to China) due to an invitation extended by the Chinese Government; in turn, the Head of State invited President Xi Jinping to come (to Peru) and inaugurate the Port of Chancay, to which he gladly agreed," Arista recalled.

"China sees Peru as a significant strategic partner due to its geographical location at the center of Latin America. Besides, they (China) know that approaching via Panama poses many risks due to drought or instability in water supply for passage through the Canal, especially with the increasing size of ships. The 10-day transportation savings from Chancay to Shanghai represent a tremendous comparative advantage for the Port of Chancay," he added.

"Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and especially Brazil will benefit. Despite the Interoceanic (Highway), there is very little trade relationship with Brazil; therefore, this port will enable Brazilian exports of grains, meat, soybeans, and corn destined for Asia to use the Port of Chancay," he indicated.
