More than 1,200 members of the Armed Forces and the National Police of Peru participate since early in the morning of Tuesday in a control operation to prevent the entry of immigrants in the border area of Tumbes, the Joint Command of the Armed Forces (CCFFAA) reported on Tuesday.

It must be noted that the actions are carried out along the borderline of said region.

The Joint Command reported that the deployment of armored units, motorized units, and military personnel in the area was ordered to strengthen control measures in the northern border of Peru, as well as surveillance and preventive actions in the face of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The military personnel from the Northern Operational Command were carried aboard more than 50 vehicles, including armored units, trucks, and patrol cars.

The soldiers were placed on the 30 illegal crossings detected by authorities in the border area, in order to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants.

In this regard, Chief of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces Major General Cesar Astudillo stated that military vehicles will remain in the borderline as long as necessary to stop illegal immigration.

According to the CCFFAA chief, February will be a critical month, hence the implementation of measures to prevent illegal immigrants —who may transmit the COVID-19 virus— from entering Peru.

These actions are being carried out following a meeting between Astudillo and his Ecuadorian counterpart, in which they agreed on control and surveillance actions within the framework of the health emergency decreed by the Government.
