Arequipa’s Traditional Loncoo Carnival to attract 25,000 visitors

Around 25,000 visitors will flock to the traditional Loncoo Carnival in the district of Cayma, Arequipa where folk groups and 'pandillas' will liven up this colorful celebration with music and dance performances.

Cayma's Mayor Oswaldo Muñiz said this is a traditional feast celebrated more than 200 years ago and is characterized by the enthusiasm of its people and colorful costumes.

During the carnival, to take place on March 6, visitors will see different kinds of masks, clowns, pyramid-shaped caps and people dancing in time to the music played by the so-called ccaperos.

The feast begins at 14:00 hours in the Francisco Bolognesi stadium and will fill streets and avenues of Amazonas, Arequipa, Miguel Grau, Juan Manuel Polar, Acequia Alta main square, Jorge Chávez, Ramón Castilla to finally reach the Lucio Vilca complex.

Carnival activities continue on March 9 (Ash Wednesday) with traditional bull fights at 13:00 hours in Acequia Alta stadium.

This festivity finishes on March 13 with the Apucllay carnival parade, which involves over 1,000 local dancers.
