Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Desilu Leon stressed that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum this year approved funding for 10 multi-sectoral cooperation projects, worth an amount close to US$1 million, presented by Peru to the Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI).

"Peru, as host of the APEC forum, has placed a strong emphasis on trade and investment as drivers of inclusive and interconnected growth," the Mincetur head said on September 10.

"For this reason, it has led the ministerial meetings on Foreign Trade and Tourism, and has participated in the Second and Third Senior Officials' Meetings, as well as the Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI) and its 10 working groups," she added.

The government official noted that the definition of approved projects is the outcome of meetings aimed at identifying good practices that can serve as a reference for developing public policies which also align with APEC's thematic and social agenda, as well as with Peru's priorities.

"The projects are related to good regulatory practices, technological innovations, digitalization and emerging technologies, electronic Bill of Lading, artificial intelligence, public policy analysis, among others. It is a demonstration of the confidence that APEC, as an institution, has in Peru," she indicated.

Similarly, Minister Leon highlighted the importance of the APEC Informational Workshop, organized by Mincetur, for informing the public and private sectors of the achievements made by the sector during the Second and Third Senior Officials' Meetings of the forum.

In this regard, the government official stated that Peru has been achieving a prominent participation in the trade and investment spaces on the APEC agenda.

Minister Leon mentioned the ministerial statements on Trade and Tourism in May and June, respectively; the development of the Co-Creation Workshop: Impact of Creative Economies on the Future of Tourism in the APEC Region; and the three dialogues on A New Look at the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP).

Additionally, she highlighted the holding of the three Digital Weeks, an initiative by Mincetur to put on the agenda various topics related to the advancement of the digital economy.

Between 2000 and 2023, Peru's trade with APEC member economies grew by an average of 9.5% annually. Last year alone, APEC accounted for 67% of Peru's trade with the world.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
