Within the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, Deputy Women Minister Elba Espinoza participated in the launch of the "Empodera Mujer Joven" (Empower Young Women) program, as part of the APEC Ciudadano (APEC for the People), which seeks to strengthen the economic autonomy of female citizens aged 18-29 years old, through training that will be provided to participants.

"I am excited to participate in this event of special relevance as the call for applications begins for the project that will benefit 100 young women in Peru in this first edition," Espinoza remarked after indicating that there are more than one million micro and small enterprises companies led by female citizens.

The Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP) official indicated that the figures are increasingly encouraging due to the total number of entrepreneurs in Peru —42.9% of them are women and the average age of these entrepreneurs is approximately 46 years old.

On the other hand, Espinoza said it is necessary to take into account that 24.7% of young women do not study or work compared to 11.9% of men.

Only 48.98% of young women aged 25-29 years old have completed high school, compared to 53.69% of young men.

Given this fact, the deputy minister indicated that "initiatives such as 'Empower Young Women' are essential for boosting equal opportunities and promoting a favorable environment for women to thrive with their ventures or business ideas."

This initiative —from May to November 2024— will be possible thanks to the coordinated work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National University of San Marcos, and other institutions.

The three best projects will receive seed capital prizes worth S/20,000 (US$5,343); S/13,000 (US$3,473); and S/7,000 (US$1,870).

Also present at this meeting were the Foreign Affairs Ministry Secretary-General, Eric Anderson; National University of San Marcos Rector, Jeri Ramon; and Andean Community Secretary-General, Ambassador Gonzalo Gutierrez.

This event took place in the Peruvian capital, Lima, on April 30.
